SWEEPING CLAIMS

MADE BY THE NAZIS EVENTS IN CRIMEA ALLEGED DESTRUCTION OF SOVIET SHIPS. COMMAND OF THE STRAITS OF KERCH. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, November 11, A German military spokesman claimed that, while attempting to evacuate droops from the Crimea, nine Soviet warships were sunk by bombs and 24 badly damaged. Sixty Russian merchantmen totalling 235,000 tons, it was further claimed, were sunk in the same operations and 69 damaged. “The destruction of these ships,” the spokesman added, “means that masses of men and material cannot be moved from the Crimea. With the capture of Kerch, the German and Rumanian troops are now facing the Caucasian foreground, while the Kerch straits are closed to all Soviet traffic, which means that the ports on the eastern side of the Sea of Azov, from Rostov to Temyruk, are cut off from communication with the south.”
