HAWAIIAN SWIMMERS
NEW AMERICAN RECORDS. Kiyoshi Nakama, the Hawaiian swimmer who visited Australia and the North Island three years ago, established a new American record of 10m. 6.25. for the 800 metres freestyle at St. Louis last month. Members of the visiting Hawaiian team won eight out of the ten races on the championship shield programme, and showed remarkable form. The only events in which mainland Americans could hold off their rivals were the 100 metres backstroke, won by Adolf Kiefer, and the high and low diving titles, won by Earl Clark. Another American record was set by the Hawaiian Jose Balmores, who won the 300 metres individual medley in 3m. 56.95., which was I.ls. faster than Kiefer’s record swim of last year. In spite of the islanders’ wonderful times, their American-born Japanese coach expressed disappointment, and said they would have been better but for the extremely hot weather, which made the pool water too warm, at 85 degrees, for fast swimming.
