The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, member of the War Cabinet, returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday. The Hon. Adam Hamilton, member of the War Cabinet, returned to Wellington from the south yesterday. The Governor-General and Lady Newall arrived today at Christchurch, where they will be in residence till the middle of January. At a meeting of the executive committee of the Wairarapa Automobile Association, Mr H. Hardinge (Martinborough) was elected to fill a vacancy on the committee. The death occurred in Wellington on Tuesday of Mrs Alice Waters, wife of the late Mr John Waters and formerly of Masterton, at the age of 79 years. The interment took place in Wellington and was of a private character. Private Paul Richard Freyberg, who is on active service with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas, has been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant, according to a Gazette notice. Second-Lieutenant Freyberg is the only son of Major-General B. C. Freyberg, general officer commanding the New Zealand Division. The selection of Mr Lowry, M.P. for Otaki, as the representative of the Government Party to visit Great Britain at the invitation of the United Kingdom branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association, was made at a caucus of the Parliamentary Labour Party in Wellington yesterday. Mr Lowry's selection was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, at the conclusion of caucus last evening.

The funeral of the late Mr F. O’Toole took place at Masterton yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by Father Dillon. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Father N. Moore. The pall bearers were Messrs J. C. D. Mackley, L. Robinson, A- Talbot, W. White, T. Kerin and G. Daysh. A large number of wreaths included one from the chairman, members and staff of the Masterton County Council. Leading Aircraftman A. S. Keith, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force is spending leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs Alexander Keith, Masterton. Prior to entering the Air Force Leading Aircraftman Keith was a member of the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand. The high esteem in which he is held was evidenced last night when a number of his friends gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs Keith to honour him. Games were enjoyed and an appetising supper was' served.
