OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
CAMP EQUIPMENT (To the Editor.) Sir, —I see by the paper that more men are going into Waiouru Territorial Camp on Monday. I do hope they, have been what things they are to take. My son went into Waiouru Camp some weeks ago, taking what things .were listed for them. The morning after arriving, they found no towels were being issued to them. One or two, .being lucky enough to have been told by friends who have served their time to take a towel, were the only ones to have them, these being shared between as many as a dozen or so mates. Regu-. lations provided for a shower bath each day, so how on earth are these men expected to carry out the rules without a towel. Boys should take a scarf, mittens, Balaclava and handkerchiefs.— I am, etc., A MOTHER. Masterton, August 29. DENTAL CLINIC CONTROL 1 (To the Editor.) Sir, —It was with considerable surprise that I read per medium of your columns a somewhat lengthy and biased report of a meeting held at Lansdowne School with a view of forming a Dental Clinic Committee. May I enquire on what authority this meeting was called and a committee set; up, when one already exists in this town? Further, was the local Dental Clinic Committee informed of this meeting or did the Director, Division of Dental Hygiene, Department of Health, grant the necessary authority over the heads, of the existing and recognised committee? Also on what grounds or authority were certain figures and. statements made, e.g., costs, maintenance, Trust Lands Trust grants, grouping of schools, etc.? Surely, Sir, this seems to be a gross breach of faith, and a lack cf confidence in the Masterton Dental Clinic Committee, which I take to be the parent body in so far as this district is concerned, and yet it has not even been consulted in this matter. Admitting that the Masterton Dental Clinic Committee was formed at a public meeting held in the Lansdowne School some months ago, after being advertised to be ■ held in a different hall, it makes one wonder just what is in the wind. —I am, etc., P. H. SHAW. Masterton, August 30. The above letter was referred to Mr J. G. McFarlane, who presided at the meeting mentioned. Mr McFarlane said the meeting was called by the Lansdowne School Committee and there was no need to inform the central Dental Clinic Committee, as the establishment of school clinics was the policy of the Department and was stressed by Mr A. D. Brice, Senior Dental Officer, at a public meeting held in Master ton 10 months ago to establish a new central committee. It was not necessary to obtain the authority of the Director of Dental Hygiene for any action taken. The information regarding costs was published fully when the Department made known its new policy of free treatment for all primary school children and the establishment of clinics at schools.
