SOCIAL GATHERING

PTE. GREEN GUEST CF HONOUR. At the Savage Club rooms last evening, a social gathering was tendered Private Alan H. Green, by members of the local Borough staff. In presenting Mr Green with a case of' Loewe pipes and tobacco in order to test them out before departure abroad, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith (Town Clerk) said that he trusted these would eventually become “pipes of peace.” Mr C. R. Mabson (Borough Engineer) ably proposed the toast of “The King's Men.” Mr Green suitably returned thanks.

Mr J. Y. Douglas (Gasworks Engin-. eer) sang two Scottish war numbers, that entitled “Hail Caledonia” being vociferously encored. Mrs Douglas played the accompaniments for the. singing.

Among the guests were Mr and Mrs T. T. Den bee.
