WITH ROLLED COLLAR. Materials: lOoz 4-ply Boucle wool or 4-ply fingering wool; 1 pair No. 8 needles; 8 buttons. Measurements: Length from top of shoulder, 18 inches; bust, 34 inches: length of sleeve seam, 19 inches. Tension: 5 stitches and 6 rows to 1 inch. ' Back: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 109 stitches (knit into back of cast-on stitches), purl 1 row, then work in , pattern as follows: — Ist Row (right side): - Knit 1, purl5, repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1. 2nd Row: Purl 1, “ knit 5, purl 1, repeat from * to end. of row. Repeat last 2 rows 4 times. 12th Row: Purl. 11th Row: Knit. Repeat last 12 rows throughout and increase 1 stitch each end of the 12th row and every 12th row following 4 times. When work measures 111 inches, shape armholes by casting off 5 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Knit 2 together at each end of next 4 rows, then next 4 alternate rows. Work even until armholes measure 71 inches; shape shoulders by casting off 8 stitches at beginning of next 8 rows. Cast off remaining stitches loosely. Right Front: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 55 stitches (knit into back of cast-on stitches), purl 1 row. Then work in pattern as for back and make the Ist set of buttonholes in the 7th and Sth rows as follows: —
7th Row: Knit 1, purl 1, cast off 2, purl ,2 knit 1, purl 2, cast off 2, purl 1, repeat from * of Ist row of pattern. Sth Row: Work 2nd row of pattern to last 7 stitches, knit 1. cast on 2, knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, cast on 2, knit 1, purl 1.
Make 6 more buttonholes in the same manner in every 11th and 12th rows following. Increase 1 stitch at seam edge of the 12th row and every 12th row following 4 times. When right front measures 111 inches, shape armhole by casting off 5 stitches at armhole edge of the next row. Knit 2 together at armhole edge of the next 4 rows, then the next 4 alternate rows. Work even until the Gth buttonhole has been completed, then increase 1 stitch at centre edge of the next row and every 2nd row following 11 times. When the armhole measures 7> inches, shape shoulder by casting off 8 stitches at armhole edge of every 2nd row 4 times. Continue in pattern on remaining stitches for 31 inches. Cast off loosely.
Left Front: Cast on 55 stitches and work to correspond with right front, emitting buttonholes. Sleeves: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 43 stitches (knit into back of cast-on’ stitches), purl 1 row. Then work in pattern as for back and increase 1 stitch at each end of the sth row and every sth row following. When sleeve measures 19 inches, shape top by knitting 2 stitches together at each end of every row until 24 stitches remain. Work 6 rows even. Cast off loosely. Waistband: Using No. 8 needles, cast on 20 stitches (knit into back of caston stitches), purl 1 row. Then work as follows: — Ist Row: Knit.
2nd Row: Purl. Repeat last 2 rows until band measures 26 inches, or desired length. Make a set of buttonholes and shape the end as, follows: — Ist Row of Buttonholes: Knit 4, cast off 2, knit 8, cast off 2, knit 4. 2nd Row: Purl 4, cast on 2, purl 8, cast on 2, purl 4.
Knit 1 row. Divide stitches as fol- 1 Icws: purl 10, join another ball of wool, purl 10. Next Row: ■■■ Knit 2 together, knit 6, ’ r nit 2 together, * with other ball of wool, repeat from * to *.
Next Row: Purl. Repeat last 2 rows until 2 stitches remain. Cast off.
To Make Up: Press with a warm iron and dartip cloth. Join shoulders. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves, gather slightly at shoulders. ’’Nace the cast-off edges of the fronts together and stitch, fold over and stitch to back of neck. Sew the buttonholes together. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Join the shaped edges of the waistband, fold •md sew on to bodice, being sure that the buttonhole is joined to the right side of cardigan. Slip-stitch the fold edge of the fronts on the wrong side.
