Major A. N. Oakey. M.C.. area staff officer, of Napier, is paying a visit oi inspection to the Masterton Defence Office. The death occurred last night in his seventy-fifth year of Mr George A. I Lewin, who. for 26 years—from 1911 to ' 1937 —was town clerk of Dunedin. He held office under 12 mayors. The British Ambassador to Moscow. Sir Stafford Cripps. M.P., who is shortly to return to Russia, has been made a member of the Privy Council, a London cablegram states. Medals for outstanding work in scientific research, awarded by the Royal Society, were presented at a meeting of the Wellington branch last night. Dr. H. H. Allan received the Hutton Medal for botanical research, and Dr. H. J. Finlay received the Hector Medal for his zoological research. Mr Arthur Wansey Wellsted, formerly commercial manager of the Railways Department, died suddenly yesterday. He retired from the department about 12 months ago, after completing forty years’ service. He was in the traffic department for many years, and was later goods agent at Wanganui and Auckland. He eventually became commercial manager, being then stationed at Wellington.

A well-known farmer of the Raupare district, Mr Robert Alexander Trotter, has died, aged 73. Born in Scotland, Mr Trotter came to New Zealand with his father, the late Mr S. D. Trotter, who settled in the Lakes District, Southland, when the colony was being established. For several years Mr Trotter farmed in Southland before coming to the Wairarapa in 1904. Later he moved to Otane. and subsequently to the Hastings district. He married Miss Isabella May Terry, Tapanui. He was a foundation member of the Hastings and District Scots’ Society.
