RUGBY FOOTBALL
INTERCOLLEGIATE GAME RONGOTAI BEAT LOCAL FIRST FIFTEEN. A FAST, HARD GAME. Rongotai beat Wairarapa College by 3 points to nil in an exciting intercollegiate Rugby match at the College grounds yesterday afternoon. Both teams were well matched and turned on a hard, clean and very fast game. The Rongotai back line was superior to the local team but the visiting forwards were not quite as good as their opponents. Included in the large attendance of spectators were the chairman (Mr W. R. Nicol) and members of the College Board of Governors. In the first spell, which proved scoreless, Rongotai repeatedly had College penned up in their twenty-five yards line. Despite frequent back movements the visitors could not penetrate the defence. The College forwards were scon to advantage in dribbling rushes. The onl.y score of the match came well into the second half when Colquhoun, captain of the Rongotai team, secured the ball from a brilliant back movement to score an unconverted try. The members of both teams worked hard and all pulled their weight. The teams were:—Rongotai: Wiffin, Backhouse, Bryant, Boyd, Newbold. Colquhoun (captain). Hawker., A. Gardiner, Gordon,. Wilks, L. Gardiner, Bateman, Divehall, Savage, Hamelin. Wairarapa College: Welch, Donnelly. Orsborne, Schofield, Skews, T. Taylor, Stevens, Daniell, Beecroft, Davey, Simpson, N. Wilson (captain), Stubbs, Boyne, Matthews. Mr E. Grantham was referee.
