FOUR MINESWEEPERS

CONSTRUCTION AT PORT CHALMERS. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 18. No time will be lost in starting the work of constructing at Fort Chalmers the large modern shipyards to build the four minesweepers for which, as announced by the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, contracts have been left. A man prominently identified with the enterprise said today that the first steps in the building programme would be taken this week. Stevenson and Cook, in conjunction with several other firms, including A. G. Price and Co., of Thames, will be responsible for the building of the four vessels within. 12 months.

Two slipways will be built, and the first two minesweepers will be launched in January of next year, five months after the keels are laid. The ships, which will have a length of 130 feet, will then be fitted for service, and it is expected that they will be commissioned three months after launching.
