AXIS AND METAXAS
ENEMY RADIO EXPLANATIONS. The German and Italian broadcasting stations had a variety of stories to tell about the death of General Metaxas. Judging from some of these stories Britain had no worse enemy than he. The stories varied with the audience to whom they were addressed. The German and Italians were told that the British murdered Metaxas “because he was ready to come to agreement with Italy on certain terms.” The. Greeks were told by the Rome radio that during his visit to Athens General Wavell refused to help the Greeks and Metaxas had a heart attack “immediately after.” The French, on the other hand, were told that the death of Metaxas was a great blow to Britain and that he is “irreplaceable.” As for his successor, Mr Korizis, everybody was told that “he was tied hand and foot to British high finance."
