W.C.T.U.

BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. took the form of an “at home” at Mrs Willoughby’s residence. Bruce Street. The attendance was small owing to the inclemency of the weather. Mrs Jansen led devotions impressing the sacred injunction to "bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Miss Tankersley brought forward matters that were vital to the movement, particularly the Dominion-wide petition sponsored by the Convention last March. Matters were discussed relating to social evils which were at present the deep concern of the Women's Organisations of the town and district. Mrs Jansen supplied the Temperance Fact as follows: “Is alcohol of benefit in an emergency? No —alcohol lessens men's power of physical endurance, delays recovery from fatigue, increases the ill-effects of great heat or cold, blunts the senses, retards nerve response, dinSinishes self control, blurs the judgment.”—Sir Alfred Pearce, F.R.C.S. Much appreciated afternoon tea was handed round by the hostesses. Mesdames Willoughby and Sims, who received the thanks of the meeting. Miss Tankersley urged the wider distribution of the “White Ribbon,” particularly in the young people's section. A profitable meeting was terminated with prayer and the pronouncing of the Benediction by Mrs Willoughby.
