WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIRARAPA FEDERATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE. OFFICERS FOR COMING YEAR. The third annual conference of the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes was held in the Savage Club Rooms, Masterton, today. There was a large and representative attendance of delegates from all parts of the district. Proceedings commenced with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the “Ode to Friendship," Aspirations and Prayer for Peace. ’ The president of the hostess institute, Mrs lan Speedy, Tiiitii Women's Institute, welcomed the delegates. Mrs F. W. Joblin, Federation president, also extended a welcome to those present. Officers were appointed foi’ the, ensuing year as follow: —President. Miss O. Wolters (Carterton);, committee. Mesdames D. N. Adams (Parkvale). E. M. Gayfer (Carterton),. J. Haeata (Te Ore Ore), F. Jarrett (Kppuaranga), S. J. Munn (Solway-Manaia), A. Keir (Kaituha-F'crnridge). S. O’Hara (Tinui), I. Speedy (Tinui), Savill-Smith (Gladstone). Voluntary organisers appointed by the federation for the year 1941 were: Mesdames A. Keir (Kai-tuna-Fernridge), G. E. Dagg (UpperPlain), and L. McKenna (Kahautara). The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, who was accompanied by Mrs Jordan, referred to the important war work which was being carried out bj’’ Women’s Institutes and urged them to carry on with the job. The presideht, Mrs Joblin, whose resignation was received with regret expressed her appreciation for the support and loyal co-operation the Federation had received from institutes. The following remit from the Opaki Institute was carried: “That this Federation makes a strong recorhwAndation to the Dominion executive to urge the Government to appoint women jurors to hear cas’es of offences against women and children.” Several delegates aild the Dominion President, Miss A. Kane (Wellington) spoke in support of the remit. It was pointed out that the sentences meted out to offenders were too light 'considering the gravity of the Offences.
