BOMBS ON DUBLIN

DROPPED BY UNIDENTIFIED PLANE SLIGHT DAMAGE TO HOUSES. NAZI AIR ATTACK ON MAIL STEAMER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 20. An official statement issued by the Government Information Bureau at Dublin states that about 7.30 on Friday night an unidentified aeroplane flew over Dublin. Two bombs were dropped. One caused a large crater in the road about 100 yards from the Sandy Cove railway station. Slight damage was done to some houses and a number of windows were broken. One person was injured. The second bomb fell in the back garden of a house but did not serious damage. At 8 p.m., at Neil Shantonach, near Carrickmacross, Monaghan, ,an unidentified plane dropped bombs. One exploded near a farmer’s house, slightly injuring the owner.

A German plane bombed the Irish Channel mail steamer Cambria 20 miles off the Irish coast on Wednesday. All the bombs missed, owing to the captain’s skilful manoeuvring, but the plane returned and machine-gunned the vessel, riddling the bridge, the funnel, and superstructure. The only casualty was the third officer, who was killed.

The ports of Galway and Sligo are to be placed under military control. Announcing this, the Eire Minister of Defcnc.e, Mr Aiken, said that this was another step in the preparation of Eire against invasion.
