TANK BATTLE
EAST OF SIDI BARRANI CAVALRY OFFICER'S ACCOUNT. ENEMY FINALLY ROUTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) CAIRO, November 25. A captain of a famous Hussar regiment who was an eyewitness of the tank battle at Hilliquat, 15 miles from Sidi Barrani, on November 21, said: — “While one tank squadron bore round the enemy’s left to cut oft' his retreat and catch his tanks at a vulnerable point in their armour, another squadron closed in from the right, under heavy fire, until some of them were 200 yards from the enemy concentration. The main task —the destruction of the Italian tanks—seemed not yet possible, due to danger from the air and the enemy flank movements. The dangers increased when seventeen Italian bombers appeared. Four Australianmanned planes immediately appeared, attacked the Italians and shot down three or more, losing one machine. Thus relieved from danger, the Hussars completed the Italian rout.”
