Y.M.C.A.

MISSIONARY WORK IN JAPAN. AN INTERESTING ADDRESS. There was a good attendance at the Y.M.C.A. lounge room last evening to listen to the address and view the illlustrating pictures given by Mr Hessell Troughton of the Central Japan Pioneer Mission. The general secretary, who was in the chair, welcomed the speaker to Masterton, mentioning the fact that Mr Troughton and his wife were New Zealanders, who had spent some five and a-half years in Christian work among the Japanese. The particular part of the country on which the labours of Mr and Mrs Troughton were / concentrated com- i prised five of the central districts which were inhabited by about ten and a-half million people, and Mr Troughton pointed out the need of these to be taught the principles of Christian living. He stated that the people were greatly interested in the Bible and its teachings as expounded by missionaries and native workers. “We can understand much of the international situation in Japan when it is realised that the Japanese soldiers have been trained along the lines of the German military system,” said the speaker. A very fine selection of lantern slides depicting the life, customs, and beauties of the country were shown. The meeting terminated with a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker on the motion of Mr W. Teeboon and with a prayer by Mr Geo. Masters.
