LAWN TENNIS
MASTERTON CLUB ANNUAL ■ MEETING. The annual meeting of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club was held in the A. and P. Rooms last evening. The president (Mr E. M. Hodder) was in the chair and there was a fair attendance of members. Mr Hodder briefly explained the conditions in which it had been agreed that the club, so far as active operations this season were concerned, should combine with the Memorial Lawn Tennis Club to form the United Lawn Tennis Club. The following annual report was presented: —“Taking into consideration the many activities connected with national efforts for war purposes, the year under review must be considered very satisfactory. On the whole the weather was favourable and the courts were in excellent condition throughout the season. As was expected, the membership was lower than for the previous year and this very important feature of the life of the club has received exhaustive consideration by your committee. The result, as you are aware, has been amalgamation with the Memorial Lawn Tennis Club for the ensuing year. “At the close of the season our groundsman, Mr W. G. Bishop, left the service of the club after many years of care and attention to its property. Over a very long period our courts and facilities have been considered amongst the finest in the Dominion and the credit for this is very largely due to Mr W. G. Bishop. We record our sincere appreciation of what he has done (often gratuitously) for the Masterton Tennis Club. "During the year a few energetic I members got busy and laid a new galvanised water main into the pa-1 vilion which resulted in a greatly improved water pressure. "The Wairarapa Lawn’Tennis Association held its annual tournament on the club courts and both Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth were in the winning pairs of the men’s and ladies’ championship doubles events. “The following are the results of the club championships for 1939-1940: Men’s singles, P. Hawksworth; men’s doubles, P. Hawksworth and P. Rishworth; ladies’ singles, Mrs N. Beetham; mixed doubles, Miss D. Allen and P. Hawksworth; most improved player (Jackson Cup), A. R. Reynolds. “The following members attained representative honours in association teams during the year:—Mrs N. Beetham, Misses D. Allen and Payton, Messrs P. Hawksworth, N. Faulknor and A. Andrew. “Quite a number of our members are on active service either in New Zealand or overseas and to them we extend the club’s best wishes for a safe return in the near future. “We again thank Mr G. R. Jackson for the use of his offices for committee and general meetings during the year. We also acknowledge and appreciate the services rendered by Mr A. D. Low in auditing the accounts for the year. To the Press also we say ‘thank you’ for publicity given to the affairs of the club.” The following officers were elected’ President, Mr E. M. Hodder; vicepresidents, Messrs H. M. A. Major and W. A. -Michael; committee, Misses T. Major, D. Allan, M. G. McGregor, Messrs G. R. Jackson and P. Hawksworth; hon secretary and treasurer, Mr A. H. Ward; hon auditor, Mr A. D. Low. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Ward for his excellent and untiring services to the club dur- . ing the past year.
