WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT AT MASTERTON. GAMES ON SATURDAY. The Wairarapa Basketball Association’s tournament was held on Saturday on the Wairarapa College grounds and interesting games were watched by a good attendance of spectators. The following are the results: — First Section. First round: College A defeated Belvedere 13/0: lona B defeated Greytown 6/5; Collegians A defeated Star B 9/4. Second round: College A defeated Masterton Hospital 11/3; Collegians A defeated lona B 15/7. Final: Collegians A defeated College A 11/8. Second Section. First round: College B won from Technical Old Girls by default: Star A defeated Greytown Hospital 9/3; lona A defeated Carterton 16/2. Second round: College B defeated Collegians B 9/0; Star A defeated lona A 8/7. Final: Star A defeated College B 14/2. In the second section the games were evenly contested and the form shown by the players is very gratifying and augurs well for the coming season. Particularly was it noticeable that the girls were paying more attention to combination than to individual play. By doing this the standard will be raised. It is a pity that some teams still advocate long passing. Basketball is a scientific game, and a high standard can only be reached by short, quick passes which provide combination. With long passing the game tends to get rough. A most interesting game was between Greytown and lona B and the decision was in doubt up till the last minute. Because of their excellent showing the executive decided to .' promote both these teams together with Carterton to A grade for this year. During the afternoon opportunity was taken by the president (Miss R. K. Edwards) to welcome new and old players and visitors. EXECUTIVE MEETING. GRADING OF TEAMS. After the tournament an Executive meeting was held. It was decided that the A grade section comprise the following teams: lona A, Star, College, Collegians. lona B. Greytown. Carterton. The teams in the B grade will be: Star B. College B. Greytown Hospital, Belvedere, Masterton Hospital. Collegians B, Technical Old Girls. The championship play will commence Saturday, May 4. It was decided that owing to the New Zealand tournament being held in April this year teams of representative standard should be sent to Rotorua and Napier, and to arrange, if possible, matches for A and B grades with Hutt and Palmerston North. Misses M. Rutherford and R. Edwards were appointed selectors for all representative teams. The postponement of matches on wet days would be decided at 11 a.m. and a notice in this connection would be placed in the shop window of Messrs J. Elliott, Queen Street. It was decided that all teams must appear in correct uniform. All teams are asked to be punctual. PRIMARY SCHOOLS FIXTURES ARRANGED.
