BASKETBALL

N.Z. TOURNAMENT CUP WON BY AUCKLAND. WAITAKI THE CHAMPION SCHOOL (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Weather conditions yesterday were much better for the continuance of the New Zealand basketball tournament in Wellington, and in consequence scores were much higher. The games played in the afternoon had fewer goals, as the wind freshened considerably. Auckland has played all its games and once more carried off the New Zealand Cup, having had no loss. This is the first time for some years that a team has won all its games in this grade. The runners-up may not be decided till the Wellington-Otago game has been played. If Wellington wins, the Annie Brown Cup will be theirs; if the game is a draw they will share it with Hawke’s Bay; and if they lose, the cup must go to Hawke’s Bay and may be shared with Canterbury. Much interest was taken in the games among the secondary schools. Palmerston North and Waitaki Girls’ High School won all their other games but drew with each other, and this necessitated a replay. Though Palmerston North tried, they were not able to keep Waitaki from winning; this meant that the final was played between Waitaki (South Island) and New Plymouth, winners of the second section. The game was full of interest, but in the first spell Waitaki, playing with the wind, made the most of their chances, and had a lead that they managed to keep till about half-way through the second half. The game became very fast in the last few minutes as New Plymouth gradually drew even, and with three minutes to go the score was 13-13. Each team tried to get the extra goal, and with a minute to go, Waitaki scored; New Plymouth attacked strongly, but the ball went out. and time was called. Waitaki had won the first secondary schools’ tournament ever held in New Zealand. The results of the matches are:— First grade: Hawke’s Bay 4, Southland 4; Auckland 20, Otago 13; Wellington 23, Canterbury 9; Canterbury 8, Otago 8; Wellington 21, Southland 11: Auckland 13.
