HOMING PIGEONS
MASTERTON CLUB. YOUNG BIRD SEASON. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club opened the young bird season with a Hock race from Dannevirke. an airline distance of GO miles. Sixty-three birds were liberated in a westerly gale and the first six places for the club points were: I. Mayes's “Courageous”, 892yds per minute, 1; J. M. Mayes's “Sherwood Gift". 892.5yds per minutes 2: I. Mayes's “Re.liance", ,892.7yds per minute 3: J. M. Mayes's “Reliable", 893.2yds - per minute 4; Stears and Miller's “Black Knight". 893.4yds per minute. 5; E. Hirst’s “Power Chief”, 893.8yds per minute, G. The second race was from Waipawa (90 miles airline) and fifty-seven birds were sent away in a strong westerly win and heavy rain. I. Mayes's bird was again the winner, the first six places being filled as follows: —I. Mayes’s "Courageous", 989yds per minute, 1; Stears and Miller’s “Spanish Don". 988.4yds per minute, 2; J. M. Mayes’s "Reliable”, 987,8yds per minute, 3: I. Mayes's "Reliance". 986.6yds per minute, 4; W. J. Miller's “Glencoe". 985.2yds per minute, 5; J. M. Mayes's "Sherwood Gift”, 984.8yds per minute, 6.
In the race from Napier, 123 miles, for two-bird teams, the birds flew through very heavy rain from Napier to Eketahuna. Only five teams were clocked in race time, the result being: W. Steer’s, 624yds per minute, 1; W. J. Miller’s, 611yds per minute. 2: J. M. Mayes's. 531yds per minute. 3; Stears and Miller's, 507yds per minute, -4; I. Mayes's. 473yds per minute. 5.
