ANGLICAN SYNOD
LAITY REPRESENTATION. A BILL DEFEATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NELSON, February 17. A bill to amend the canon of the General Synod, having the effect of reducing the number of representatives of the laity from 4 to 3 for each diocese, was defeated on a division on the second reading of the bill. The subject arose out of the report of the commission appointed to investigate the constitution and procedure of the General Synod. Generally, all six members of the commission recommended a reduction of the lay representatives,. The Bishop of Dunedin, as chairman of the commission, said it was desirable to use every means to reduce the expenditure on sessions. Mr H. D. Andrews (Christchurch) summed up the general opinion of laymen when he advanced the opinion that the more laymen who could be interested in the high courts of the Church the more its decisions would be accepted by the general body of church people. The small amount of expense that would be saved did not warrant a reduction. The voting on the division was:— Bishops: Ayes 6, Noes 1. Clergy: Ayes 14, Noes 10. Laity: Ayes 8, Noes 21.
