CARTERTON

NEW YEAR SHOPPING BUSINESS PEOPLE SATISFIED. • (“Times-Age” Special.) s The business people of Carterton are ; very well satisfied with the trade that was done in the shops last evening. There was a large crowd in the streets and the fact that shops will be closed from midday today until Wednesday morning necessitated housewives obtaining provisions to last over the holidays. The Wairarapa Pipe Band again enlivened the town with a programme oi music. They first paraded up and down the street and were followed by dozens of delighted children. Their music was much appreciated and many favourable comments were made concerning the progress the young band is making. PARKING OF MOTOR CARS ACTION OF COUNCIL APPRECIATED. The large number of visiting cars that arrived in Carterton from adjacent districts yesterday and last night were compelled to park in the areas allotted in the borough. This did away with congestion in the main street, and made it safe for children and adults to move about without any fear of danger. Inspector Nicolson and two borough inspectors did their work well in preventing the parking of cars in the main street. The people of Carterton thoroughly appreciated the actiori of the authorities in keeping the main street clear of motor vehicles. Wairarapa Races. A long stream of cars and other vehicles passed through Carterton this morning en route for the summer meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club, which is being held at the beautiful Tauherenikau course today in bright sunny weather. Personal. Flying-Ofticer Warwick Lawrence, son of Mr Jas. A. Lawrence, is in Carterton on holiday. He is attached to 7 the Hobsonville Flying Base at Auckland. Mrs McDermott, of Auckland, is spending a holiday with Mrs Corbett, Carrington.
