James Cowan, well known for his knowledge of Maori folk and their customs, has a very thrilling treatise, “Makutu, the Magic that Kills and Cures,” in which the arts and crafts of the oldtime Maori wizards are well described. Ken Alexander, with witty and humorous phrases and droll sketches, shows up man as “The King of Boasts,” with much to learn from the beasts. O. N. Gillespie continues his excellent articles on New Zealand industries with a farranging review of footwear and other leather goods. Neville Lewers revives the romance of gold and coal on the West Coast of the South Island. Rosaline Redwood has a colourful chronicle on fishing in the West Coast Sounds. Dorothy Wiseman reveals dramatic days of the Chatham Islands from a century ago and onward. There are many other good features, including about 60 pictures.
