Offer for Beaulivre Refused. Another offer for the purchase of Beaulivre was made the other day by Mr M. Miller, Brisbane, who is visiting Auckland. He asked Mr E. C. Harnett, Wellington, to put a price on the unbeaten colt. Mr Harnett later told an interviewer that there was no probability of his selling Beaulivre. He had had several big offers, but was going to keep him.

Reversing the Going. It should never occasion surprise when a horse with excellent form on a left-hand course fails when racing the opposite .way, as at Ellerslie. In the first place, a horse becomes accustomed to galloping left hand, with a lead by the near foreleg, and has to reverse the lead when travelling the opposite way. It is for that reason that Riccarton horses are galloped the reverse way when booked to race at Ellerslie, but it is not always a success, because they are apt to become unbalanced, and so fail, and fail badly. in comparison with their best form. The same applies to Randwick and Flemington. Nevertheless, horses raced and trained mostly on left-hand tracks have achieved considerable success in the Auckland Cup and other races at Ellerslie, but it may be taken for granted that they were previously well schooled to travelling the righthand way.

An Unusual Enquiry. At the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Tuesday, the stipendiary steward. Mr C. H. Hartland, called the judicial committee together concerning a paragraph which appeared in the “Evening Star,”' Dunedin, on December 26, in which it was stated: “In Australia jockeys who take wrong positions at the barrier are subject to a severe penalty, but in the Otago district there are one or two jockeys who make a practice of edging in towards the rails, and apparently get away without any reprimand. Several breaches of this rule went unchecked by the authorities at Wingatui on Saturday.” It was unanimously resolved that Mr W. A. Saunders, sporting writer of the “Evening Star.” and writer of the paragraph, was guilty of an offence under rule 338 of the Rules of Racing regarding wrongful information detrimental to racing; but the question of a penalty be adjourned until January 26. A Hokitika Winner. Lady Magellan, a winner at Hokitika, is a four-year-old by Cape Horn, and is being raced in partnership by Mr W. W. Mitchell and her trainer. M. Conza. This was her second race only for her present owners, who purchased her cheaply in the North Island a few months back. Should Win Soon. Racewell, whose dam Ilda is by Iliad from Ebba, wsa given confident support when she won the Novice Handicap at Wingatui. She has been gradually working up to winning form, and can be expected to carry on as a winner. Favourites Unlucky. During the 24 years since it was first permitted by law to publish the order of favouritism for races in the Dominion. only four actual favourites have been successful in the Auckland Cup and five in the Railway Handicap, and on not a single occasion have the favourites won each “leg” of the big Boxing Day double in the same year.

Thoroughbred Sale. A sale of thoroughbreds was held at Epsom on Wednesday. Considerable interest was shown in the offering on account of the estate of the late M. Steinberg, but bidding in most cases failed to reach the reserves. The three-year-old filly Konneta was passed in at 435 gns. Fidelis, a full-brother to Catalogue, was passed in at 210gns, and the two-year-old Mimax, by Musketoon — Elope, at 200gns. Wapaugh, a three-year-old gelding by Siegfried from Polonaise, was purchased by Mrs Morris, Auckland, for 125gns. Other sales were: On account of Mr A. J. Court and partners: Four-year-old gelding Brazilian, Mr J. R. May, Mount Albert, 50gns; four-year-old gelding Milanion, Mr N. Austin, Papatoetoe. 1021gns; five-year-old gelding Silver Glow, Mr J.
