SURRENDER OF WARSAW
DECLARED BY GERMANS TO BE UNCONDITIONAL. CITY COMPLETELY DESTROYED. The following Daventry reports have been relayed by the New Zealand National stations: — The Polish garrison at Warsaw has capitulated unconditionally, according to the German High Command. The formal surrender is expected to take place on Fi'iday. The capital is completely destroyed. All monuments and churches are in ruins. Herr Hitler has ordered martial law to be declared in the German occupied areas of Poland. A German communique states that the army in Poland is still approaching the line of demarcation previously announced by the Soviet and Germany. It is not explained whether the German forces are advancing towards the line or qre retreating before the Russians. TALKS WITH TURKEY. The Foreign Ministers of Germany, Estonia and Turkey are in Moscow. There are no further reports regarding a suggestion that some sort of treaty is under discussion between Russian and Estonia. It is stated that the Soviet is demanding the use of two islands off the Estonian coast as naval bases. Estonia has given a categorical denial that the Polish submarine, which escaped from Estonia was repaired while it was in Estonian waters. The visit of the Turkish Foreign Minister is believed to be concerned with a discussion on Balkan problems as a whole. The Japanese Ambassador in Moscow called on Mr Molotov. It is believed he may have sought information regarding the visit of Herr von Ribbentrop. THE WESTERN FRONT. French' rcconnaisance units have been active on the Western Front. It is now clear that two German towns are seriously threatened. Saarbrucken is under such intensive fire that the enemy has been forced to evacuate it completely,, leaving the city partly encircled. Zweibrucken is also under French gun fire and is seriously threatened by the French advance. The Germans state that the French are entrenching along the whole front. The German artillery has extended its range of fire against the French rear and is shelling evacuated French villages. French artillery has seriously damaged portion of the Siegfried Line fortifications. SOVIET SHIP SUNK. A message from Moscow states that a Soviet ship of about 4000 tons has been sunk by an unknown submarine off the Estonian coast. Nineteen of the crew of 24 were saved.
In Washington it is expected that the debate on the new Neutrality Bill for the repeal of the arms embargo will begin on Monday.
