INDOOR BASKETBALL

v.m.c.a. teams at play.

MASTERTON v. HUTT VALLEY.

Two of the most hard-fought games ever seen in Masterton and played in an excellent spirit were seen in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium on Saturday night when the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. teams met teams from the local Y.M.C.A.

The ladies’ game which was played first resulted- in a win for Masterton by 52 points to 15. This game was not so one-sided, as the score would indicate. As the two Y.M.C.A’s. play their games under different sets of rules, the first half was played under the Hutt Valley rules (similar to those played in the 1939 New Zealand tournament). At half time the Masterton team led by 25 points to 7. As the next New Zealand tournament is to be brought, more up-to-date the second half was played under the new rules and the game was much more even. Hutt Valley could easily have put up a much bigger score had it not been for the great intercepting and defensive game played by Miss M. Gadsby. Miss O. Lysaght was in good form and scored 28 points.

In the men’s game, which was played at a fast pace, the Masterton team lead right up to within two minutes of the call of time when D. Benton scored a beautiful goal from half way. This made the score Hutt Valley 29, Masterton 27. The Masterton team made a gallant effort to equalise the score, and cracked on the pace with each player handling the ball several times in fine style. However, they could not reach the tally which would have made the game a draw and which would have been a fitting final to such a game. R. Riley played a good game but lacked that balance- which is so necessary to a player that plays forward. W. Reynold did not show up as usual, because he was well watched by. the Hutt Valley backs. It is most encouraging to the selectors (Elders Lynn and Handy) that the team that they selected acquitted themselves so well.

The following players took part in the games: —Masterton ladies: Mfeses M. Gadsby, A. Burgess, P. Kilminster, J. Gemmell, O. Lysaght. Hutt Valley ladies: Misses C. Cato, M. Jenkins, M. Egglestons, L. Horsyall, S. Aimes, L. Rosman. Masterton men: W. Reynolds, S. Faulknor, W. Reynolds, R. Riley, D. Costello. Hutt Valley men: R. Cato, S. Geary, W. B. O’Shannessy, D. Benton, R. Peters. The points scored were as follow: — Masterton ladies: P. Kilminster, 1 goal, total 2 points; A. Burgess. 5 goals, 10 points; O. Lysaght, 14 goals, 28 points; J. Gemmell, 6 goals, 12 points. Hutt Valley ladies: C. Cato. 4 goals, 8 points; M. Egglestone, 1 goal, 2 points; J. Harrigall, 1 goal. 2 points; L. Rosman, 1 penalty goal and 1 goal, 3 points. Master ton men: S.
