PROMOTE LEAFY GROWTH BY USING FERTILISERS. There is no better time than the i present to apply nitrogenous fertilisers that promote leafy growth, and potassic fertilisers which are of benefit to plants producing fruit. Spring cabbage crops will respond most readily to one ounce per square yard of sulphate ammonia. Young fruit trees will show great benefit when sulphate of potash is applied to the soil around the roots. One ounce per square yard should be quite sufficient. This fertiliser tends to improve the colour of the fruit. Small fruits such as currants and gooseberries are all the better for the addition of potash. The lawn also may be treated with fertiliser at this time. Specially compounded mixtures can be purchased for the purpose. MOSQUITOES GUARD AGAINST THEM. Few of us pay much attention to gnats and mosquitoes until summer is upon us. Much may be done in early spring to prevent the pests from in- : testing our own garden at least. : Water, and particularly the still water ; of pools and ponds, whether natural : or artificial, is the breeding place of ; mosquitoes. i During September they may be easily destroyed in their early stages. Cover the surface of any still water in : your garden with a thin film of kero- i sene—one tablespoon will spread a ' long way. The oil will not damage i plants, and as it does not penetrate be- ' neath the surface, it is harmless to fish i or animal life in the pool. It will, nevertheless, prevent the maturing of j mosquito larvae. ;
