RINGWORM IN CALVES

QUICKLY CURED IN EARLY STAGES. Calves and young stock are most frequently affected by ringworm. A microbe is responsible for this, skin disease, and in its early stages the complaint can be quickly cured. It is very contagious. If no action is taken in guarding against the spread of the disease, the condition of the stock will suffer, due to the irritation which the complaint causes. Most farmers are familiar with the appearance of ringworm. It generally attacks the head and shoulders, and in extreme cases the body. Circularpatches on the skin soon loosen the hair, leaving a bare, slightly inflamed spot. Later a scaly crust forms. The animal affected should be isolated and treated, as rubbing on trees or posts will soon help to. spread the trouble through the herd. If the youngstock have the run of a shed, whitewashing will help to disinfect the place and check infection. »

The following treatments -will give good results: Wash with soap and waler to remove the crust. Rub in any well-known antiseptic ointment to kill the microbe and thus check the disease. Sulphur ointments are also good, or paint with tincture of iodine.
