BADMINTON TOURISTS
MATCH AGAINST NORTHERN TASMANIA. VISITORS BEATEN BY SIX RUBBERS TO TWO. On their arrival at the Melbourne Station, the members of the New Zealand badminton team were met by the Australian team which visited New Zealand last year. The New Zealanders were later welcomed by; the Mayor at a reception and dinner held in the Town Hall. Members of the New Zealand team were evidently affected by the long journey from Wellington to Launceston as they lacked condition in the first match against Northern Tasmania at Launceston. Private advice received states that the New Zealanders were beaten by six rubbers to two. but the details of the matches show that the touring team’s performance was much better than shown by the result in rubbers. With one exception the matches all went to three sets, the New Zealand representatives winning the first set each time. "This indicates,” states the Australian informant, “that they could not stay the distance, probably as a i result of the long travelling they have ■> undertaken." Results of the contest with the Northern Tasmanian team were: — Hawksworth lost to K. Johnstone. 15-9. 11-15. 12-15; Roussell lost to T. Sydes, 15-8. 11-15. 12-15: Miss Fleming beat Mrs Schill. 11-4. 11-1: Miss Kerr beat Miss Daymond, 11-5. 11-3: Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth lost to Johnstone and Mrs Johnstone. 15-11. 12-15. 11-15; Pearce and Miss Kerr lost to E. Smith and Mrs Schill. 15-13. 9-15, 8-15: Roussell and Spedding lost to E. Smith and T. Sydes. 10-15. 17-18. The other result is not to hand. Summary: Northern Tasmania. 6 rubbers. 12 sets. 247 aces; New Zealand. 2 rubbers. 9 sets. 242 aces. The Now‘Zealand team was to have played at Hobart on Saturday, and at Melbourne on Tuesday.
