Mr J. T. Tunna has been appointed manager for New Zealand of the London and Lancashire Insurance Com- j pany, Ltd. in succession to Mr C. E. | Harrison, who has retired. The death has occurred of Mr Alfred Paxton Backhouse, a former judge of the District Court of New South Wales, aged 88. a Sydney cablegram reports. Mr Backhouse was prominent in sporting circles and look considerable interest in rowing and sailing. Detective W. R. Fell. Palmerston North, has received advice of his transfer on promotion to Wellington to the position of acting detective sergeant. Detective Fell has been stationed in Palmerston North for 16 years, the last five of which he has spent in the detective branch. Detective E. H. Compton has also received notice of his transfer to Wellington on promotion as detective-sergeant. His place will be taken by Detective B. J. Long. Wellington. Mr Clifford Sanderson, a young architect who left Dunedin some years ago and who has been doing postgraduate study in town planning at the London University for the past three years, has been awarded the diploma in town planning of that university. After graduating at the Auckland University College, Mr Sanderson, who is a son of Mr L. Sanderson. Dunedin, was awarded the travelling scholarship in architecture in 1935 and left for London to gain further experience in his profession. At London University he was fortunate in being able to study under Professor Abercrombie, considered to be one of the foremost town planning experts in England.
