TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE

Statistics for 1938-39 Racing Season - WINNING OWNERS, TRAINERS AND JOCKEYS T. R. GEORGE HAS ANOTHER GREAT “TROT” (BY “CARBINE.”) It is no new experience for that popular trainer T. R. George to head the winning list in New Zealand and for the 1938-39 racing year just completed he is again out in front. The leading jockey, W. J. Broughton, and the leading owners, the trustees of the Clifford estate, have both had the honour of topping the list before. Although Defaulter and sire, Beau Pere, are at the head for the first time, it is not likely to be the last. There is no doubt that all five winners are worthy champions of the year.

Champion jockey in 1935 and third last year. W. J- Broughton has headed the jockey’s list by a comfortable margin after a keen tussle during the autumn and early winter with H. N. Wiggins. Broughton is riding better at present than ever before. He will be congratulated in all quarters, for he has worked hard for his position in the forefront of New Zealand’s jockeys and is one of the most popular horsemen with all sections of the racing community.

H. N. Wiggins, who ranks second, has done well considering that a trip to California caused him to start the season nearly two months after the official opening. Wiggins has yet to head the list, but this is the third occasion on which he has been second. Former leading apprentice G. R. Tattersall has had a first-class season as a fully-fledged jockey to be in the third place just in front of B. H. Morris and A. E. Ellis, who for many years now have always occupied a prominent place. O. Evans is the leading apprentice and also has probably ridden more outsiders to victory than any two other horsemen. Below are the leading jockeys:— W. J. Broughton 80; H. N. Wiggins 64; G. R. Tattersall 50; B. H. Morris 47; A.’ E. Ellis 43; A. Messervy 38; C. T. Wilson 38; A. Jenkins 37; R. McTavish 37; P. Burgess 31; 0. Evans 31.

During the past nine years T. R. George has held almost a mortgage on the leading trainer’s position, having headed it for the seventh time following an amazing “trot” during the autumn.

George has a wonderful record as a trainer, having turned out 328 winners at Trentham during the past ten years. The real struggle among the.trainers was for the second position, which finally goes to the New Plymouth mentor H. Dulieu after a very close contest with L. G. Morris, I. Tinsley and H. S. Greene. Dulieu with 31 wins has a total which would have given him first place in most seasons and he has been unlucky in striking George with a vintage season. In only five years as a trainer Dulieu has done particularly well. Once before he was in second place on the list. H. S. Greene takes the honours for his great success with jumpers, especially during the early winter. Figures for the leading trainers are:

T. R. George 44: H. Dulieu 31: L. G. Morris 29; I. Tinsley 28; H. S. Greene 27; Mrs A. McDonald 23; F. A. Roberts 23; F. Smith 22; M. Conza 21; S. J. Rc-id 21.

Through the famous Stonehurst Stud and Chokebone Lodge stables have passed many of New Zealand's most celebrated gallopers, and once again this year they are at the head of the owners’ list, the total won by the trustees of the Clifford estate being an extremely formidable one. Defaulter's success has been mainly responsible for earning Mr H. D. Greenwood second place, while Beaulivre, Globe Trotter and Royal Star II did a great deal towards the late Mr W. Higgins being in third place. The leading owners and their winnings are: — Clifford Estate £6540; H. D. Greenwood £4,843: W. Higgins £4,275; T. A. Duncan £3,990: T. Impey £3,800: G. M. Currie £3,495; T. H. Lowry £3.295: F. Ormond £3 163: A. Rowan £3,140; E. Fitzgerald £3,097; A. F. M. Symes £3 068: G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb £3,049.
