PRICE OF SUGAR
TRIBUNAL HOLDS INQUIRY REPORT BEING PREPARED. POSSIBILITY OF GOVERNMENT TAKING ACTION. (By Te’oemnh—Precc Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. ‘‘During recent weeks there has been much publicity on the subject of sugar and the Government has been concerned at the tendency for the prices of this important commodity to advance,” stated the Hon D. G. Sullivan. He added that very considerable advances were made in the wholesale price of sugar and an inquiry showed this increase was due to a rapid rise in the price of raw material on overseas markets. As a result, the wholesale prices were advanced and the retailers also advanced their prices. The Department of Industries and Commerce made urgent investigations in order that the Government might form an opinion as to whether the retail advances were reasonable and iusHfiable in Imht of the wholesale increase. With the setting up of the Price Investigation Tribunal it was deemed advisable that the tribunal should hold a judicial inquiry into the whole subject. The inquiry was July 4 to 6, and the tribunal was now preparing its report. Immediately it was received, full consideration would be given to the advisability of taking any action with regard to the price of sugar.
