NOTABLE ANNIVERSARY
MARRIAGE OF PIONEERS.
One hundred years ago today at the St. Mary de Logue’s Anglican Church, Gloucester, England, Mr Henry Collett, of Gloucester, was married to Miss Elizabeth Collett, also of Gloucester, some of whose relations now live in Masterton. Both later died in the Hutt Valley. Mr and Mrs Collett embarked immediately after their marriage on the sailing ship London for New Zealand. They landed at Petone beach early in 1840 and lived in the Hutt Valley all the rest of their years. They had seven sons and three daughters, the sole surviving member of that family being Mr Albert W. Collett, who now resides in Taumarunui. Grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren of Mr and Mrs Henry Collett are resident in the Hutt Valley, Masterton, Dannevirke, Waipawa, Gisborne and several other New Zealand towns. Mr and Mrs Collett were two of the foundation members of St. James's Anglican Church at Lower Hutt. Other members of the family have always taken an active part in church affairs and also a keen interest in the promotion of any of the early day activities, each and everyone of their sons haying borne his share of the troubles in the early day Maori risings. Mr and Mrs Collett and family were noted for their hospitality, having always kept an open house for travellers in those days.
