The suggestion that women could assist in various ways in defence was made by Miss Nelle Scanlan, speaking at the English Speaking Union luncheon at Hastings. "I feel that there should be a complementary body of women to volunteer in the event of emergency.” she said. Miss Scanlan said that the union could form a register of women who. if the need arose, could do such tasks as driving ambulances. If members of the branches of the union offered their services, here would be the nucleus of a national register.
