COMMON GAMING HOUSES
FINES IMPOSED ON OFFENDERS. ECHO OF POLICE RAIDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N.. May 29. Fines totalling £267 were imposed in the Magistrates’ Court on offenders under the Gaming Act following raids carried out in the city and at the back of the Awapuni racecourse on Saturday. John Vickerstaff, aged 48, billiard saloon proprietor, was charged with 'using premises as a common gaminghouse and was fined £75. Thomas Hodgson, barman, was fined £3O on a charge of bookmaking. Reginald Wallace Mouldey, charged with beingfound on premises used as a gaminghouse, was fined £2. Robert Jules de Cleene, charged with being found in Stewart’s Road, Awapuni, on Saturday, for the purpose of betting, was fined £3O, and Hughie James Trask, 38, on a similar charge to that of de Ceene, was fined £lOO. Mrs K. A. Holmes was fined £25 on a charge of keeping premises as a common gaming-house and her husband was fined £5 on a charge of assisting her.
