RISKY VENTURE
ATTEMPT TO FLV ATLANTIC IN VERY SMALL PLANE. YOUNG AMERICAN TAKES OFF. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 28. A message from Old Orchard (Maine) states that Mr Thomas H. Smith, formerly of Los Angeles, aged 25, took off at 4.50 a.m. (Eastern standard time). His friends said he hoped to reach London in 33 hours. He flew the smallest plgne manufactured in the United States, a single-motored 65 horse-power Aeronca, christened “Baby Clipper.” It is’understood that he did not possess a Federal authorisation for the flight. The plane held 179 gallons of fuel, which, plus accessories, totalled twice the weight of the plane itself, thus requiring a run of 1920 feet to enable it to rise from the ground. The cruising speed is 85 miles an hour, and the machine consumes 4.2 gallons hourly. The airman’s friends said if he did not make London he would probably try to land on the Irish coast.
