EFFORTS FOR PEACE
MR CHAMBERLAIN LOUDLY APPLAUDED a AT PRESBYTERIAN GENERAL ASSEMBLY. EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY WELCOMED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 27. The Prime Minister, Mr Chamberlain, was cheered by a crowd in Downing Street this morning as he left by car for a weekend in the country. Mr Chamberlain arrived back last night from Edinburgh, where he attended a session of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. There was a striking scene, when, at the invitation of the assembly, the Prime Minister rose to make a brief address. He was greeted by loud and prolonged applause. He said he hoped it was not presumptuous to suppose that the remarkable reception given to him was more than an act of courtesy to the Prime Minister. He. hoped it was an expression of sympathy for “the man who has been striving night and day with all his might and main, and in spite of many discouragements, to keep the peace of Europe, and npt only to keep the peace precariously from day to day, but to do something more —to remove that fear of danger of war and the sense of insecurity which today is oppressing tens of millions of people.” Mr Chamberlain observed that, while those in responsibility recognised that the troubles of today could not be cured by armaments, they could for the present see no other way than to arm Britain in her own defence.
