Pruning Street Trees. A commencement was made this morning with the pruning of the street trees in Perry Street. These trees are among the oldest planted in Masterton streets and are subjected to much more severe cutting than is necessary with more recently planted trees. Junior Rugby Representatives. • Owing to an epidemic of influenza, Mr G. Udy, sole selector of the Wairarapa Junior Rugby side to play Hawke’s Bay at Masterton on June 5, has found it necessary to defer his selection- until later in the week, and it is expected that the team will be announced in the “Times-Age” on Thursday. Football Club Dance.

The dance held by the Masterton Football Club in the Arcade Hall on Saturday night attracted a large attendance. Messrs lan Percy and F. Lusty acted as M’s.C. and the supper arrangements were in charge of Mesdames W. Percy, M. Fly and H. K. Saunders. Te Tau’s orchestra provided the music for the dancing. A Goose 42 Years Old.

How long does a goose live? It is reported that there is a goose on Mr Gimblett’s farm at Mangawhata 42 years of age. He is a real veteran and was reared on the farm. The farm changed hands a couple of decades ago, but the goose survived and still struts about the property in search of food. He refuses to be fed by anyone.

Price of Sugar, A reduction of 10s per ton is announced this morning in the price of all grades of sugar, including golden syrup and treacle. During the past six or seven' weeks, the price has been increased by £3 per ton and today’s announcement reduces this to £2 10s. It is not expected that the retail price in Masterton will be affected, unless there is a slight reduction in the price of bag lots.

Name Objected To. From unofficial sources it is learned that the cry of “Zambuk” which is commonly called on Palmerston North football fields when the services of members of the St John Ambulance brigade are required, is not appreciated by brigade members. If the football public thinks the service the ambulance men render is worth anything at all, it is felt they could be referred to with more respect. It is reported the use of the nickname referred to was stamped out in Hastings by the brigade members refusing to attend matches until its use was dropped. “Discretion the Better Part.”

'When inspecting an area of land near Winslow which will be replanted with young trees, former planting having been a failure, members of the Ashburton County Council noticed that a mob of sheep was grazing in the plantation. Instructions were issued to the ranger to impound the sheep and claim damages from the owner for trespass and for damage to the trees. When the ranger appeared later in the day, however, he found that the sheep had disappeared/' Apparently the arrival of a bus load of councillors was too much for the owner.

Camp for Ex-Soldiers? ■■

Accommodation at Trentham camp for ex-servicemen desiring to visit Wellington for the Centennial celebrations will be made the subject of representations to the Defence authorities as the result of a suggestion at New Plymouth. In advancing the proposal at a reunion of South African War veterans, Lieut.-Colonel G. F. Bertrand said he thought it would be th emost practicable way of dealing with the situation if the Minister would consent. It would, otherwise, be the most practicable way of dealvisit Wellington to meet old comrades, for, even now, he was informed, there was little chance of booking temporary accommodation. Mr F. L. Frost, M.P., who was present, promised to interview the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, on the subject. Youth Hostels.

It is not generally known that New Zealand has youth hostels run on the same principle as the famous ones of England and Europe. They have become well established in the South Island, and it is hoped to have a chain of them started soon in the North Island. Clubs in the North Island which are affiliated to the Youth Hnstels Association of New Zealand, are the Tararua Tramping Club, the Alpine Sports Club, the Kiwi Tramping Club, the Ruapehu Ski Club,. the Manawatu Tramping Club, and the Ruc-Sac Tramping Club. The seventh annual report of the association shows a wide interest in the work, and an urgent need for more hostels. Hostels exist in Banks Peninsula, Cashmere Hills, the Oxford district, and in Westland, and are 12 in number.
