ATTITUDE OF GOVERNMENT CRITICISED SIR JOHN SIMON REPLIES. “NO IRREVOCABLE ACTION UNTIL AFTER RECFSS.” (British Official Wifeless.) (Received This Day Ll 5 p.m.) , RUGBY, May 26. In the House of Commons, Sir Archibald Sinclair (Liberal leader), criticised the Government’s appointment of Consuls at Bratislava and Prague, and urged the Government that in any action it might take to protect British interests in Prague it should do nothing involving recognition of the German annexation of Czechoslovakia. Other members criticised the constitution of both the Bank of England and the Bank of International Settlements.
Sir John Simon, Winding up the debate for the Government, outlined the reasons for the fact that assets held in the name of the Bank of International Settlements enjoyed complete immunity from seizure or embargo, and promised to reconsider the legal aspects of this position in all its aspects. He also intimated that the question of Consular representation at Prague was under consideration in consultation with other governments, but he could give an assurance that no irrevocable action would be taken until the House resumed after the Whitsun, recess.
