CULVERDEN CONTINUES TO IMPROVE:

(By

"CARBINE.”)

Culverden continues to Improve in his schooling, and he should be capable of a good performance in a hack steeplechase early in the winter. He is retaining the condition which .seems to be all that is necessary for him to carry on to success. Debut Made. When Royal Choice and Lord Hereford won the hurdle race and steeplechase at Awapuni each was making his debut in that class of race. They will both be seen in action at Wanganui. Extra Day Requested. Both the Waikouaiti and Vincent Clubs have made application to the Racing Conference for an extra day. Each of these clubs run a very successful annual fixture, and should be content with their present allocation of dates. Blue Logan’s Breeding. It is stated that Blue Logan, a winner at the recent meeting at Forbury Park, descends from a draught horse mare on his dam’s side. Adioo Guy Mare. One of the mares purchased by the Tasmanian breeder Mr E. Tatlow, during his visit to the Dominion, is an Adioo Guy mare from the dam of VoIgda, who was sold to him by Mr W. R. Jones, of Riversdale. Bonnie Rollox. Another attempt is being made to resurrect the Australian-bred gelding' Bonnie Rollox, who has four unplaced performances., since he came to New Zealand over two years ago. He started -twice last season and twice during 1936-37. Jockeys for Ellerslie. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting; to be held at Ellerslie on June 3,5, 7:—J. F. Maori Song's Form. The Hunting Song gelding Maori Song, who paid a big dividend at the Waikato meeting, won a double over six furlongs at the Wellington winter meeting in 1937 as a three-year-old. He then showed promise of better things, but although an occasional winner, never came up to his early promise. Maori Song's previous win was in May of last season. Steeplechase Candidates. Unless anything unforseen happens between now and June 5, it would appear probable that the Great Northern Steeplechase candidates around which most interest will centre will be John Charles, Allegretto, En Tour, All Irish. John Charles has only to school well over the Ellerslie country to be assured of a great following. Applications for Next Season. The Winton Jockey Club has applied for February 16 and 17 for its annual race meeting next season, and the Gore Racing Club for February 17 and 19. The Southland District Committee recommends that the Gore Club be granted February 24 and 26. Wellington Stakes 'lncrease. The stakes allotted to the Wellington Winter Meeting total £ll.OOO, an increase of £B5O over last year. The minor events have come in for special attention and the minimum stake for any race at the meeting will be £3OO. Disband Sold. It is reported that Disband has been sold to Mr D. U. Crosbie of Southland. Hyderabad Going Well. Hyderabad, has improved appreciably since last raced at Easter, and is training excellently at Hastings. Promising Novice. Ebb and Flow, a seventeen-hand gelding by Tidal, from the Lord Quex mare, Kahuariki, gave a very fine display at Hastings this week, for a novice, and later when sent over three of the steeplechase fences went even better.
