Major J. R. Kirk remarked at the recent annual meeting of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, that all over the world nature was severely punishing man for his mistakes in indiscriminate destruction of protective forests. In many countries now, very energetic and far-reaching efforts had to be made in schemes to save the soil upon which the welfare of humanity was absolutely dependent. He was pleased to see that the Government was setting up a commission to inquire thoroughly into the erosion trouble in New Zealand, and to make recommendations for amendment of the mistakes of the past. A resolution was adopted congratulating the Government on its decision, and offering the utmost assistance of the society for the achievement of the ideal of soil saving.
