Today’s racing at Randwick was de- 1 cidedly better than on Saturday, there being larger fields, thrilling finishes, 1 and some fast times. ' The New Zealand-bred Posterity colt Mosaic, who did so well in the St. Leger on Saturday, ran up to form and < won the Sydney Cup convincingly from c last year’s winner, L’Aiglon. The New ( Zealanders, Defaulter and Malagigi, i were crowded in and found the early pace hot. Malagigi alone showed to ’ some advantage, finishing third in a 1 race run in time only a quarter of a second outside Wotan’s Australian and ] New Zealand record. i The trainer George Price at the ( A.J.C. meeting has so far won the J Doncaster Handicap with Gold Rod, the , Easter Plate with Waireka and the j Biraganbil Handicap with The Squire, < all of whom carried the colours of Mr r E. J. Watt and were ridden by McCarten. ■ The jockey L. J. Ellis, describing De- ( faulter’s disappointing display in the , Sydney Cup, said he struck trouble in , the first ftirlong, where six or seven * horses “squeezed round me,” after j which Defaulter refused to do his best. ‘ Badger said Malagigi was outstayed , by two better horses. _ , The weather was again glorious and the attendance was 62,000. Defaulter at the rear of the field made a forward move at the seven furlong post but then fell back and was not . afterward dangerous. Malagigi came • prominently into the picture at the six ; furlong post, but was unable to over- , take the leaders. In an exciting finish, ; Mosaic, vigorously ridden, headed ; L’Aiglon and won by a length and a quarter, with Malagigi a length and a, ' half off third. Feminist was fourth. Jan Baz fifth and Marauder sixth. Defaulter was second to last in a strungout field.
