REGENT THEATRE

‘•BACK IN CIRCULATION.” ‘Back in Circulation,” starring Pat O’Brien and Joan Blondell, which will be shown tonight, is an engrossing newspaper drama, presenting a behind-the-scenes view of the ethics of news gathering and the power of the press over lives and reputations. A spectacular train wreck provides a thrilling introduction to the murder mystery elements of the swiftly paced narrative that follows. The photoplay presents a new and exciting characterisation by Joan Blondell as a smart girl reporter who takes keen professional pride in her job. The story revolves around the death, under mysterious circumstances, of a millionaire. This becomes known, through an anonymous letter, to Pat O’Brien, editor of a metropolitan tabloid newspaper. Sensing sensational news, he assigns his star reporter to investigate. Amassing a damaging amount of circumstantial evidence, the widow of the seemingly murdered man, portrayed by Margaret Lindsay, is brought to trial. Refusing to enter any defence to the charge, she is found guilty, chiefly on the strength of the stories unearthed by the news sleuths. Amidst the melodramatic involvements of the murder trial, Joan Blondell, although her activities have been the moving influence in the persecution, becomes convinced of the condemned woman's innocence. “ADVENTURE OF ROBIN HOOD.” The romantic and half legendary stories that have through the centuries gathered round the figure of Robin Hood have been made excellent use of in the picture of the same name which commences on Saturday at the Regent Theatre. The adventurous atmosphere of Sherwood Forest, domain of the outlawed knight and his green-clad followers, is faithfully reproduced. Clothyard shafts fly to their marks in the bodies of Norman oppressors of the Saxons and the merry outlaws of the forest carry out the policy of robbing the rich to give to the poor and to pay the ransom for Richard the Lion Heart imprisoned in Europe. Meantime Richard’s brother John, aided by certain nobles, is planning to seize the Throne and Hobin Hood’s several successful attempt to upset his plans provide some of the more exciting moments in the picture. The film is entirely in colours. Errol Flynn plays the leading role and Olivia de Havilland is a lovely Lady Marion.
