CROQUET

MASTERTON PARK CLUB CLOSING OF SEASON. Beautiful weather prevailed for the closing of the season by the Masterton Park Croquet Club on Saturday. There was almost a full attendance of members besides a large number of hon. members and visitors. Proceedings started early with half-hour croquet which kept everyone busy until lunch time. In the afternoon there were several competitions including one for honorary members and visitors. At three o’clock an adjournment to the pavilion where the table decorations came in for much admiration, Mesdames Snowsill and Wilson-Thompson being responsible for this work. The tables were well laden with good things and the tea was very much enjoyed. Subsequently the president (Mrs Polson) presented the various cups won during the season as follows:— A championship, Mrs Polson; runnerup, Mrs Donnelly. B championship, Mrs Betteridge; runner-up, Mrs Scrivener. C championship, Mrs H. Thompson; runner-up, Mrs McMaster. Best Memorial Handicap Cup, fwfrs Doggett; joint runners-up, Mesdames Bassett and Polson. Scrivener Cup for most improved C player, Mrs Syd. Taylor. The members of the club made a presentation to the president, and Mrs Aitken made eulogistic references to Mrs Polson’s service during her long term of oflice. Gifts were also made to the hon. secretary (Mrs Betteridge) and the captain (Mrs Donnelly), who were all accorded musical honours. The recipients returned their thanks to the club members for the gifts.

The president made a presentation to Mr Sturgeon on behalf of the Club. Upon returning to the lawns, competitions took up the remainder of the afternoon.

At the conclusion of play the trophies won were presented and the president took the opportunity of thanking members for their loyal co-operation during the season, and said that she hoped to see them all ready to start off again next year. The winners of Saturday’s competitions were: —Half-hour croquet: A. Mrs Polson; runner-up, Mrs Donnelly. Halfhour croquet: B, Mrs Trevorrow; run-ner-up, Mrs Betteridge. Consolation, Mrs Williams; angles, Mrs Weller, with Mrs Wilkinson runner-up; French croquet, Mrs Aitken; runner-up, Mrs Jenkin; hitting the peg, Mesdames Snowsill, Wilson and Thompson tied. The competition for honorary mem,bers and visitors was won by Mrs Andrews, of Lower Hutt.
