ESPERANTO

MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. At the- weekly meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club, held last evening in the clubroom. Municipal Buildings, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presided over a satisfactory attendance. The secretary presented correspondence received during the week comprising a communication from the New Zealand Esperanto Association relative to the organisation and conduct of clubs in the Dominion; two postcards in Esperanto from Czechoslovakia and one from Hungary, and letters from Austria and Cuba. It was reported that communications in Esperanto from Austrians, Hungarians, Poles and Czechs desiring to migrate to New Zealand are being received at the rate of one each week. The usual tuition was provided to elementary and advanced study circles by the president and Mr W. H. King, good progress being made by both groups. Mrs J. McNab, vice president, gave a reading in Esperanto of the original poem. “Sciuro kaj Pagapo,” portion of which was subsequently analysed to advantage on the blackboard. In a brief talk to members, Mr King reported that Esperantists in various countries are freely enrolling as members of the 31st Universal Esperanto Congress which is to be held in August in Berne, and which at least two New Zealand Esperantists are expected to attend. Recent Esperanto newspapers announce that King Boris of Bulgaria had congratulated the Bulgarian Esperanto Society on the occasion of its 33rd anniversary; Esperanto courses have been introduced into the Belgian University in Antwerp; and the French Minister of Education had issued a decree permitting Esperanto to be taught as a voluntary subject in colleges, also in secondary, technical and high schools and in tea'chers’ colleges throughout France.
