FISHING IN FRANCE
THREE MILLION ANGLERS. From statistics of members of fishing clubs, fishing permits and other documents, it is estimated that fishing counts three million adepts in France. Followers of Sir Isaac can indulge in the gentle pastime all over France, and everywhere they will meet brothers of the rod and line. A fisherman’s map of France shows that trout abound in Normandy, Brittany, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central and the Limousin, the French Alps, Morvan and HauteSeine, Jura and the Vosges. Salmon is found in the Avranchin, Brittany, Loire and Allier and the Eastern Pyrenees. Grayling are fished in'the rivers of Jura, Savoie and the Massif Central. Ombles chevaliers are found in the lakes of Savoie- and Isere. Smaller sea fish are fished all round the coasts of France .and bigger fish, such as ray, conger eel, and dog fish in the Channel off Cancale.
Tunny-fish are caught in the Gulf of Gascony and the Mediterranean. Fish must be of a certain size, otherwise they must be returned to the river. These dimensions, from eye to tail, must be: for salmon, 15 inches, eel 10 inches, and all other fresh water fish G inches. Gendarmes and fishing inspectors have a right to examine any catch. During the open season, fishing is -allowed from sunrise to sunset.
The French National Railways have just published a fishing map of France which can be obtained on application to the French national Railways, Victoria Station, or the French Tourist Office, 179 Piccadilly.
