The Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, left Wellington for Auckland by train last night. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries and Commerce, left Wellington for Christchurch by the interisland steamer express last night. In connection with the diploma in banking examinations held by the University of New Zealand, A. R. Todd and J. M. Urquhart, of Maste.rton, have passed in the “Banking I” section.

Mr H. E. Moston, C.8.E., Assistant Secretary of Labour, will succeed Mr J. S. Hunter as Secretary of Labour. Mr Hunter was recently appointed to an administrative position in the new Social Security Department. Estates for which probate has been granted in Auckland in December include the following:—Jabez William James Marks, £45,000; Edward Glasson Phillipps, £30,000; Harry' Arthur Purser, £25,000; Samuel John Atkins, hotelkeeper, £22,000; John Barclay Henry, retired bank manager, £20,000; Richard Vanstone, Opotiki, retired farmer. £17,000; Arthur George Buchanan, commission agent, £15,000; John Farrell, architect, £13,000. The work of Cabinet for this year will virtually end today, by which time most of the Ministers will have left Wellington for a short vacation. One or two of them are postponing their departure till the weekend or early next week. The Prime Minister, Mr Savage, will be remaining in Wellington, but, like everyone else who has the opportunity, he intends to take things easy over the holiday period. Members of Cabinet in Wellington yesterday met Mr Savage and made him a presentation of a set of crystal from his Ministerial colleagues. They asked the Prime Minister’s acceptance of this gift as a token of appreciation of his comradely qualities, coupled with their utmost confidence in his leadership.
