PADISHAH AND MAZIR PLEASE

(By

“The Cynic.”)

A brilliant sfeVen-furlong gallop by Streflot a fast five furlongs by High Caste and Kohheta. and a sound mile and a-quartei- by the Cup candidates Padishah and Mazir, were features of yesterday morning’s exercises at Ellerslie. Others who pleased were Defaulter, Marie’s Acre, Tooley Street and Coronation. The course proper, With the poles out 45ft, was open for galloping, and although the weather was boisterous, the going was excellent. Latest arrivals include The Buzzer, Disdain, Quadroon, Old Bill, Smoke Screen, Scandal, Wotan, Homily, Submission and Entail. Chelandry (Tremain) beat First Gold Money (Gilchrist) by a neck over half a mile in 52 l-ssec, the first furlong taking 12 4-ssec. It was Chelandry’s best showing to date. Knight of Australia (Messervy) completed the last seven furlongs of an easy round in 1.42 1-5, the last three furlongs in 43 sec. He is a lazy worker, but he is very well at present. Good Passage (Ellis) strode over six furlongs comfortably in 1.23 3-5, the last three taking 44sec. His stable-mate, Trench Fight (Humphries) was under A gold hold to run 1.23 4-5. Trench Fight looks in great order and is to Contest the Christmas Handicap next Monday. After running the first furlong in 13sec, Aero King (Hearn) completed half a mile in 53 l-ssec. Bonnybelle (Messervy) recorded 53sec. Paper Slipper (Humphries) ran five furlongs in 1.7 3-ssec, after taking 25 3-ssec for the first two. lie mbved freely and looked as if he could have done a good deal better. ■ Erination (Tremain) was a length in front of Palmint (Gilchrist) at the Conclusion of six furlongs in 1.21 3-5 sec, the first two being run in 28sec. Jonathan (Messervy) traversed a round in 2.12, the last seven furlongs occupying 1.35 4-ssec, and the half-mile, 53 3-ssec. He did his work well and should be in good heart for his engagements on the later days at Ellerslie. Gay Son (Wiggins) covered seven furlongs in 1.35 l-sset, the last halfmile occupying 54 l-ssec. He finished attractively and looks fit after recent racing. ... The Cup candidates Padishah (Ellis) and Mazir (Humphries) took 2.15 1-5 ’sec for their mile and a-quarter. they ran the round in 2.5. l-sseCi the last seven furlongs in 1.32 l-ssec and the half-mile in 54 3-ssec. they were being kept up to their work and Padishah appeared to be doing slightly the •better. The Auckland Cup to-weight has worked attractively since his arrival and has gained many friends. •Actor. Mr R. Green, son of Mr Sol Green, the well-known Victofian racing man, who is spending a holiday in New Zealand, says that their French horse Actor, will be sent to Mew Zealand in February for a spell on Mr M. Grogan’s farm, Westmere. It was MiGreen who recently made the big offer for the Auckland filly Konneta. Dunedin Summer Meeting. A light misty rain was falling at Wingatui yesterday morning during training operations, which took place on the plough track, which, despite an unusual rainfall spread over a lengthy period, provided good going. The outside of the course was shut during the morning. One of the first to work was Astaire, whb sprinted three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Violenta travelled half a mile in 53sec. McHeath and Pilot's Love left six ■furlongs behind in lmin 22sec —the last ■five in lmin Bsec. New Note and Tupai were companions in a gallop over half a mile in 52sec. New Note was doing the better at the finish. The two-year-olds, Linwood and Fancy Phil were not fully extended when covering half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Nightwings did a working gallop over about 10 furlongs, and left the last six behind in lmin 26sec. Valantua was sent along from the front of the stand and pickdd up Atua Rere and Our Pal inside the mile post. A solid pace was maintained all the way, and the trio finished together. Valantua covered nine furlongs in lmin 59sec, a mile in lmin 46sec, and the last seven furlongs in lmin 33 3-ssec. Valantua was being kept up to his work and going well at the finish.

Half Note and Hanlon took 59sec to cover four furlongs.

Quick Return, a Gustavo gelding, and Our Empire left half a mile behind in 54 l-ssec. Norseman did strong work over a circuit, taking lmin 41 l-ssec over seven furlongs. Spear Thrust was shaken up to beat Sunny Jean at the finish of seven furlongs in lmin 7 2-ssec. ■ Riccarton Horses. Among the large number of horses that will travel from Riccarton stables to race in different parts of the Dominion during the holidays will be about twenty for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. They will go south during the next day or two. They look a useful lote, likely to get a fair share of the prize-money. S. Barr will have a team of three. They will include two jumpers. Sir Rosenor has had some experience in this department, but, though he is well, there is nothing in his race form to commend him in useful hurdle company. Recollection, on the othe hand, is only a novice, but he is a good galloper, able to stay. He has had a fair amount of schooling, in which he has shown up as a very impressive jumper, one of the most promising novices seen at Riccarton for some time. Cape Gabo, the flat racer of the party', has disappointed many times since he won at Riccarton in August. He returned recently to Barr’s stable, from Which he did his early racing, but he seems to be unreliable. Juveniles. C. Emerson has a couple of two-year-olds in his trio, Miss Otis, by Myosotis from Royal Baby, and Montessa, by Brazen from Irolene. Neither of them has had a race, but they have been galloping so Well that they may soon be ready to show form. Their mate on the trip will be Great Baby, a three-year-old that has a turn of speed, though she has done nothing of note in public yet. F. D. Jones has Lady Leigh in great ordei 4 , and this speedy sprinter should pay her way. She will be accompanied by Prudent Prince, a two-year-old that showed some promise earlier in the season and how looks on the way to better deeds. M. B. Edwards will send three from his Yaldhurst stables. Ponty has nothihg recent to,commend him, as he has not been placed in ten starts this season. CocksUre is a different proposition, as he has had three wins and a third in his last six starts. He is one it should pay to follow. Miss Bluff opened -the season With a' win in maiden company at Ashburton, but she has been unplaced five times since then. W. J. McLean has Great Bramble as his only first-day candidate, and her term this season has not been impressive. Two others are possibles for later in the trip. Dracula has been working' well and Top Rank looks ready to show useful hurdle form again, though he is high up in the weights now. H. R. Davies will have SovereignLady as his sole charge. She is at the top of her form and needs only average luck to pay her way. Manetho will make the trip under the care of his owner, Mr R. D. Westenra. The horse has been galloping freely, but he may need race experience over hurdles.

F. A. Roberts will send Night Dress. Some of his hack form earlier in the season was very good, and he is in good fettle to improve his record in open company.

T. L. Jennings has Lord Hawke going well, and he may make a useful horse, as he sticks on. His well-performed brother, Second Innings, . is now at Riccarton, preparatory to going south, where he should do very well. Happy Memory, though he has been sold, has done all his work here. He is an improving young horse, liable to develop useful form. Relations. Bernadotte, the best colt in Hungary, and winner of the St Leger at Budapest, is a son of Franklin, sire of Modiste 11, dam of Royal Chief. Franklin himself finished second the Doncaster St Leger in 1921. The dam of Bernadotte is imported Bellerive, by Marten, son of Marco and Sire of Inchaquiro. sire of Allunga. Invoice. Invoice has not been seen out this season, and did not win last season in 20 starts, but was placed seven times. He would make a mess of things if he ran to his bett form of last season. At Ashburton last year he was third to Grey Honour and Top Row, when giving the last named 21b and beaten by a head over six furlongs in Imin 11 2-5 sec. At Waikouaiti Top Row is giving him 291 b over seven furlongs. Bred by Mr George Kain. The Lord Warden —Halo colt Saint Warden, who is proving himself leading juvenile in Western Australia this season, was a winner again at the W.A.T.C. Meeting at Perth on December 5, scoring under top weight of 9.0. Saint Warden was purchased at the national sales last January for 325 guineas. At Ellerslie. The McDonald stable will have four of Mr T. H. Lowry’s horses at Ellerslie. They are the Beau Pere fillies. Millament and Chevychase, Beaupartir, and White Gold. Beaupartir has been nominated for the Queen’s Plate and, all going well, he will get his chance to keep Defaulter busy in the Great Northern Derby. A McDonald will have charge of the Ellerslie team. Mrs McDonald will have a number of horses engaged at Manawatu, including Sudan, Brazil, Conveyer, Royal Record, Thrasos, Bumble, and Old Surrey. Catalogue was entered for the Manawatu Cup, but was scratched on Monday and was not weighted. It is not likely that he will again sport silk until the Wellington meeting next month.
