SHEARING COMPETITION

1 CONTEST FOR YOUNG FARMERS Members of Young Farmers’ Clubs will be interested in a shearing competition, to be held at the Palmerston North A. and P. Show in November by the Manawatu Young Farmers’ Club district committee. The competition, which will be open to club members, will be conducted on a national basis, and entries are being invited from all clubs throughout New Zealand. The prize money is very attractive, £6O having been guaranteed'by the Manawatu A. and P. Association., The competition will be held on Saturday, November 5, and entries will close on Saturday, October 15. Competitors will be required to shear three sheep, one as a trial, and the other two for competition. It may be necessary to run the competition in heats and finals, but this will depend on the number of entries received. Judging will be on the basis of speed and efficiency, including style and finish. Time limits will be set for each class, competitors gaining or losing points as they improve on or exceed the time limit. Competitors will be required to supply their own handpieces, including combs and cutters. The competition will be divided into three classes: Championship, for members who can shear at the rate of 150 sheep or over, per nine-hour day; intermediate, 100 to 149 sheep, and learners, for members who cannot shear at the rate of more than 99 sheep per nine-hour day. The prize money has been allotted as follow: —Championship, £2l, £7 and £3; intermediate, £l2, £5 and £2; learners, £2 and eight prizes of £1 each. Arrangements are being made for a camp or other accommodation for competitors, and visiting club members while railway fare concessions will also be obtainable.
