FRANCE ON GUARD
MAGINOT LINE FULLY MANNED MEN CALLED FOR INDEFINITE PERIOD. PRECAUTIONS AGAINST AIR ATTACK. (Recd This Day, 12.15 p.m.) PARIS. September 7. The Maginot Line is now fully manned from the Luxemburg frontier to Switzerland. Most of the reservists are chosen from those who would shortly have been called up for the normal period, but whereas their papers would have specified a number of weeks they are now called to the colours, for an “indefinite period.”
The first test of the anti-aircraft sirens in thirty-one districts around Paris occurs at noon tomorrow. The population has been warned against alarm, the measures being purely precautionary. BELGIUM READY EASTERN FRONTIER HELD IN STRENGTH. (Recd This Day, 12.15 p.m.) BRUSSELS, September 7. Owing to the shortness of communications, mobilisation would occupy only a few hours. Security measures throughout the country are complete. The eastern front defences are fully manned. Artillery and ammunition have been sent up, tank traps prepared, all fortifications mined and bridges and tunnels made ready for immediate destruction in case ground were lost.
