STATE THEATRE

“CONDEMNED WOMEN.” The current programme headed by “Condemned Women,” at the State Theatre will be finally shown tonight. “HAPPY LANDING.” So many superlatives have been used previously to describe the sheer artistry on ice of Sonja Henie that it is relatively difficult to describe afresh the poetry of motion of this twinkling star in “Happy Landing,” which will come to the State Theatre tomorrow night. Her art is consummate. But brilliant though her skating is, it does not attract attention away from her development as a star in more normal directions. Always attractive, she wins the sympathy of the audience by her pleasant and innocent charm of manner. The picture itself is very entertaining, inasmuch that it is not all one star. At one time Sonja enjoys the complete spot-light;' at others Cesar Romero is very much the central figure, and at still another Don Ameche is the dominant personality. The whole picture can be grouped under the head of fine entertainment. There are several catch songs, and the dialogue is in the best twentieth century style. The story is one of a temperamental dance band leader and song writer, Duke Sargent (Cesar Romero), with a passionate weakness for inspiration—inspiration which only the fair sex can provide. With a splendid selection of shorts, this is a programme that you really must see.
